Governance Crucial to Organisations

Governance is crucial to all organisations, whether they are large listed companies, community-based not-for-profits or government bodies.  Making sure that there are proper mechanisms in place to align strategy, to manage risk and to prepare for the future is vital for an organisation to thrive.  Effective governance is also the bedrock of strong Australian communities and a robust economy.

The Australian Institute of Company Directors is committed to excellence in governance.  Our aim is to make a positive impact on society and the economy through governance education, director development and advocacy.  Our membership, which is more than 39,000 strong, includes directors and senior leaders from the business, government and not-for-profit sectors.

The AICD Victorian division is particularly strong, holding regular events and educational programs around the calendar, both in Melbourne and the regions. Our events feature leading directors discussing and debating the issues and challenges that are currently facing boards and organisations.

We offer a wide range of courses that provide a comprehensive governance education for directors of all experience levels.  Our flagship education program, the Company Directors Course™, is the gold standard in director education.  The five-day course (offered intensively or over five weeks) is designed for experienced directors who want to take their performance to the next level.  It gives directors an in-depth understanding of their duties and responsibilities from financials to compliance to strategy.  We also offer shorter courses on specific areas of governance to address the particular needs of directors and executives from different types of organisations.

The AICD recognises that the professional development of our members is not just about attending courses and events, it is an ongoing and constant process.  In an era of unprecedented complexity, directors need to be across more than they ever have before, from regulation to potential to disruption.  The AICD website has an extensive range of resources to help directors excel in their roles and address these issues.  The site hosts toolkits and director Q&As. We provide the latest news on governance issues and developments. Director Assist gives complimentary access to governance and legal expertise.  Members receive reports, research and data that they can use to help optimise governance at their organisation. And the AICD sends regular member alerts on significant policy changes.  We also provide a job-listing service, Directorship Opportunities, for board positions.

Directors are constantly on the move.  To help our members make sure they could always have somewhere to get work done, network or just unwind, we built a network of lounges that could be an office away from the office.  All members gain complimentary access to the AICD’s Business Centre and Member Lounges in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.  The lounges are modern multi-functional spaces which can be used for meetings, work or relaxation.  The Victorian Business Centre and Member Lounge is located on Collins Street in the heart of Melbourne and has panoramic views over the Yarra.

The AICD is committed to helping directors and their organisations continue making the outsized contributions they do to society, particularly in regional areas.  We want to partner with directors and organisations in Victoria to make sure that governance and leadership is strong throughout the state.  The AICD has a close relationship with the VRCLP cohorts and the AICD joining fee is waived for members or past alumni of the VRCLP Leadership Groups, saving $220 on the cost of initial membership.  We hope you can join us in building a strong governance community in regional Victoria.
