How is LEADERSHIP like a tree?

LEADERSHIP, just like a tree has many facets to it.

What starts out as a seed, which may have been planted or dropped by an animal it quickly takes root and starts to grow and spread. A tree won’t grow without the key nutrients it requires in which to proposer – water, soil, sun etc. and leadership growth is no different, having a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset goes a long way towards developing your leadership skills. Carol Dweck author of Mindset believes that all abilities are trainable and developed through effort and learning from failure. Just like the tree we can grow our leadership.

  • A tree has branches that reach out and embrace the space it occupies – your leadership tree has branches and should envelop those you lead.
  • A tree may lay dormant in Winter and then cascade back into bloom in Spring or it may continue to flourish all year long – leadership can sometimes become dormant and then bloom back into life. Don’t let your leadership die by denying it vital nutrients in which to survive.
  • A tree requires symbiotic relationships in order to thrive – effective leadership requires you, among other things, to be humble, lead by example, demonstrate integrity, build trust, empower others and to motivate and inspire.
  • A tree provides shade from the elements and allows us to dream – leadership can provide shade for those we lead. As a leader these words from Simon Sinek – Leaders Eat Last ring true “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”
  • A tree when pruned will provide new growth – as a leader you have the ability to sprout new growth. “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending” C.S Lewis.

Are there other ways you can compare a tree to leadership, I would love to hear your comments?
